The winery is located in the municipality of Weisenheim am Sand in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The traditional family has been growing grapes here since the 17th century. The first bottling was introduced in the mid-1960s by Willi Langenwalter. Son Klaus Langenwalter and his wife Renate gradually expanded the family business to 24 hectares of vineyards. In 2011, a newly built cellar was put into operation. After training as a wine technician in 2002, Thorsten Langenwalter joined the winery and now runs it together with his parents and wife Daniela. In 2010, the business of his parents-in-law in the municipality of Freinsheim was also taken over. Today, the vineyards cover almost 31 hectares of vines in the single vineyards Altenberg, Burgweg, Goldberg, Hahnenberg, Halde and Hasenzeile (Weisenheim am Sand), as well as Musikantenbuckel, Oschelskopf and Schwarzes Kreuz (Freinsheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are cultivated according to environmentally friendly, ecological principles. These include cover crop, organic fertilisation, renunciation of insecticides and pest control using the confusion method. Quality criteria are yield reduction through appropriate pruning, foliage care for the right balance between foliage, grapes, aeration and sunlight, and thinning out with about 50%. Selective harvesting is mostly done by hand in several passes. Only healthy and fully ripe grapes are processed quickly and, above all, very gently using state-of-the-art technology. The white wines are fermented mostly in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures between 15 and 17 °Celsius in a fruity and pure manner. High-quality batches are partly fermented in wood and barrique. The red wines are stored in large wooden barrels for almost a year after the mash fermentation. Complex, powerful wines then mature for 12 to 24 months in barrique. The premium wines include Hahnen Pinot Blanc and Altenberg Pinot Noir. Every year, 150,000 bottles of wine are produced, 15% of which are exported, mainly to the Netherlands and Denmark. The winery is a member of the Forum Pfalz winegrowers’ association.
