Producer Information
Edmond Vatan is a tiny but high-quality and sought-after domaine in the village of Chavignol in the Sancerre region of the Loire Valley. It produces a single Sauvignon Blanc cuvée that has the reputation of being able to easily age for two decades or more. The Sancerre Blanc Clos la Neore, made from a one hectare (2.5 acre) parcel of the famous Mont Damnés vineyard in Chavignol, on steep slopes with great exposure to the sun. Vines are pruned severely to limit yields and maximize quality. Harvests tend to start after neighboring domains have finished. Wines are made using very traditional methods in old neutral oak barrels, with just one racking, and are bottled without fining or filtration. Just 500 cases are produced each year and so the wine is incredibly rare. In past years miniscule amounts of Sancerre Rouge have been made from the Pinot Noir grape. Edmond himself retired from full-time winemaking in the early 2000s. His daughter Anne Vatan-Foucault has been in charge of winemaking and administration since 2008.
