Detailed Description
We fermented the grapes using only yeasts that naturally occur on the grapes and allowed the wine to gain flavors and color from extended skin contact. Each lot is aged separately for several months, and then blended to create a wine that is more complex than its individual parts. After blending, the wine spent another year and half in barrel to completely harmonize before bottling. Elegant and full bodied, the wine’s complex aromas of black berries, black licorice and a hint of cocoa powder are the perfect partner with grilled steak, roasted rack of lamb or venison stew.
Reviews:
- James Suckling: A strong and structured red with lots of dark fruits and chocolate. Full and silky with a solid core of fruit and dense tannins. Yet, it is not at all overdone. Energetic wine. Made from biodynamic grapes.
- Vinous: (blended with 5% petit verdot, 3% merlot and 3% cab franc): Bright red-ruby. Dark berries, loam and brown spices on the nose. Supple and lively if a bit pinched in the middle, with good inner-mouth floral lift to the berry and spice flavors. Finishes with dusty tannins, a slight herbal character and good persistence.
Producer Information
Grgich Hills Estate is a historic fixture in Napa Valley, founded by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich in the Rutherford AVA in 1977. The winery produces an array of wines from five estate vineyards located throughout the valley.Mike Grgich gained notoriety for crafting the 1973 vintage of Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that ranked top at the famous Judgment of Paris tasting in 1976, beating out some of Burgundy’s most famous white wines. As a result, Grgich Hills Estate’s Chardonnay is one of the more popular wines in the range, sourced from cooler vineyards in American Canyon and Carneros. With no malolactic fermentation, this is a fresher style of Chardonnay with bright acidity.
