Detailed Description
Medium red. A step up in sappiness on the nose from the preceding samples, with notes of mint and orange zest lifting the aromas of cherry, raspberry and red licorice. Lush, suave and intense on the palate, with excellent inner-mouth tension to the red berry, mineral and spice flavors. Lovely fruit and energy here. The slowly mounting finish features thoroughly integrated tannins and very good focus for the year.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots is a complex, engaging wine. It fills out beautifully on the mid-palate with generous dark fruit, spices, leather, licorice and tobacco. Soft and engaging through to the finish, the Suchots impresses for its fine balance and harmony. The vines in this parcel are 90 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
- Burghound: A highly complex and very Vosne nose features mild wood influence along with abundant spice notes on the red currant, plum and black cherry fruit and violet suffused aromas that are very much in keeping with the rich, seductive and velvet-textured flavors that evidence controlled power. This is quite suave but there is fine definition, focus and excellent length. In a word, terrific.
Producer Information
Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is a Burgundy producer of high-quality Pinot Noir from prestigious sites in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine was founded in Vougeot by Alain Hudelot in 1962, although the Hudelot family can trace its history in Burgundy back to before the French Revolution. Hudelot married Odile Noëllat in the 1970s, which increased the domaine’s holdings – the Noëllat family has its own significant history in Burgundy. In 2008, Alain retired and his grandson, Charles van Canneyt, took over running the estate alongside cellarmaster Vincent Munier. The domaine has roughly 10 hectares (24 acres) of vineyards with plots in four villages (Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges) and in 15 different designated sites. The highest tier of Pinot Noir comes from the grand cru vineyards Richbourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Clos de Vougeot. Hudelot-Noëllatt has a reputation for high vine ages, which it maintains through methodical replanting. The average age is more than 50 years, with several vineyard plantings dating back to 1920, including parcels in Romanée-Saint-Vivant. New oak use in the cellar is regulated to roughly 20 percent for the village wines, going up to 50 percent (and sometimes more) for the grand cru wines. The domaine makes a Bourgogne Aligoté along with its numerous premier cru and villages-level Pinot Noir.
