1967 | Pio Cesare | Barolo
Red Wine: 1967 | Pio Cesare | Barolo
The 1967 Barbaresco from Pio Cesare was consistent with my experience with other bottlings from this large producer. The wine is quite good and shows good typicité, but not quite the precision and transparency of the very first tier producers.

Detailed Description
The 1967 Barbaresco from Pio Cesare was consistent with my experience with other bottlings from this large producer. The wine is quite good and shows good typicité, but not quite the precision and transparency of the very first tier producers. However this is still a good drink that has clearly been at its apogee for a few decades, and yet continues to offer plenty of enjoyment. The bouquet is a classic, mature mélange of dark berries, licorice, tar, sous bois, dried herbs and charred wood. When first opened this wine showed a whiff of maderization, but as it sat in bottle and gently acclimated the wine cleaned up nicely. On the palate the wine is fullish, mature and shows good depth, with lovely length and complexity on the slightly blurry finish.
Producer Information
Pio Cesare is a wine producer in Piedmont, Italy, particularly known for its elegant Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is one of the oldest in the region and one of the first to export. It is still owned and run by his descendants. The cellar is located in the centre of Alba and its main walls date back to the Roman period. The company owns 70 hectares (172 acres) of vineyards in the Barolo and Barbaresco regions, including substantial holdings in the famous Ornato vineyard in Barolo and Il Bricco in Barbaresco. Fruit for Pio Cesare’s wines is also sourced from managed vineyards under long term contracts.Pio Cesare produces five single-vineyard wines, which are only produced in the best vintages. There are also more generic offerings of Barolo and Barbaresco, as well as Langhe Nebbiolo wines, Dolcetto d’Alba and Barbera d’Alba, Grignolino and Freisa. The range of white wines includes a Gavi and one of the best-regarded Arneis wines in Piedmont, and is led by the single-vineyard barrel-fermented Chardonnay Piodilei.
