Producer Information
Fattoria dei Barbi is a Tuscan wine producer based in Montalcino and particularly known for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. The estate is owned by the Colombini family, who were active in Sienese politics as early as the year 1000 and present in Montalcino since 1352. Barbi produces three Brunello di Montalcino red wines: the flagship Blue Label, the single-vineyard Vigna del Fiore from the five hectare (12 acre) plot of the same name, and the Riserva. Younger vines supply the Rosso di Montalcino. On top of this, Barbi produces a Morellino di Scansano wine from a 28 ha (70 ac) plot on the Tuscan coast, a Chianti, and a range of IGT Toscana wines. A Vin Santo, a range of grappas and a range of olive oils complete the line-up. The estate spreads throughout Montalcino and Scansano, covering approximately 80 ha (200 ac) of vineyards. At Montalcino, these are located on the south-facing part of the hill, where marly limestone soils provide a good base for the Sangiovese that is planted here. The vineyard is low-yielding, and berry selection is rigorous to ensure only the best goes into the Brunello wines – usually around 60-percent of the harvest.
