Producer Information
Bodegas Riojanas is a major wine producer and wine group based in the Rioja town of Cenicero but encompassing several wineries, numerous Spanish wine regions and producing nearly 70 wines across 20 brands. It is probably best-known for its Viña Albina and Monte Real Rioja brands. The winery was established in 1890 by the Artacho family in Cenicero, on the banks of the Ebro river, 20km (12 miles) due west of the regional capital Logroño, in the Rioja Alta. Brands such as Monte Real and Artacho are established in the early 20th Century, the former by French winemaker Gabriel Larrendat who worked at the winery for several years until returning to France in 1933. The winery continued production through the era of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship (which ends in 1975) and by the 1980s, investment in production and storage at the winery is increased. The company is partially listed on the stock exchange in 1997. Expansion into other regions begins in 1999 with the establishment of Bodegas Torreduero in Toro. This is followed by Bodegas Viore in Rueda in 2016 – the same year Bodegas Riojanas acquires Bodegas Veiga Naúm in Rías Baixas. The winery also partners with fashion designer Roberto Verino on the latter’s project, Bodegas Gargalo, in Monterrei. Bodegas Riojanas also produces Alacer in Ribera del Duero, the Cvm Lavde Cava brand (a standard Cava Blend produced from grapes grown in Penedes) and Viore in Bierzo. Often, several labels are produced with a region with the Viña Albina, Gran Albina, Albina Essencia, Monte Real, Puerta Vieja, El Lago de Bodegas Riojanas, Canchales and Borisa all produced by the winery in Rioja alone. Torreduero also produces the Peñamonte and Marques de Peñamonte labels. Inversely, the Viore brand covers wines from Rueda, Bierzo and Toro. Bodegas Riojanas also produces the Cuppedia Vermouth brand.
