Producer Information
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine’s vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares (15 acres) at grand cru, premier cru, and village-level sites across Vosne and neighboring communes. Wines in the domaine’s portfolio included village Vosne-Romanée wines, old-vine Pinot Noir from the Premier Cru vineyard Les Brulées, and wines from each of the estate’s three grand cru sites: Clos Vougeot, Grands-Echézeaux and Echézeaux. The wines were vinified without much extraction, and were rarely matured in more than 50 percent new French oak. In 2006, René Engel’s vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d’Eugenie was formed.
