Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Monolithic, but denser than most vintages tend to be, this medium to dark ruby/purple-colored wine shows good body, solid tannin., a certain chunky, foursquare character, but there is good depth, weight, and concentration, with moderate tannin in the finish.
- James Suckling: Floral and fruity, this red shows notes of red fruits and rose. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish.
Producer Information
Château Cos Labory is a left-bank Bordeaux estate in Saint-Estèphe producing Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant red blends. It was designated a 5th Growth estate in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. The Cos Labory property was producing wine at least as far back as the 18th Century, when it was known as Château Gaston after the proprietors at the time. The name eventually became Labory through marriage before it was bought by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, owner of the neighboring property Cos d’Estournel. In the middle of the 19th Century, both properties changed hands again, during which time several top vineyard parcels in Cos Labory were redrawn to be part of the Cos d’Estournel estate. Château Cos Labory is now 18 hectares (44 acres), making it one of the smallest of the cru classé châteaux. It is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with some Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Petit Verdot. The vineyard has a high gravel content along its border with Cos d’Estournel but has more clay along its other border, ideal for its Merlot. The Château Cos Labory is a 60-percent Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 35-percent Merlot and a tiny portion of Cabernet Franc. It is fermented in large stainless steel vats prior to aging in American oak, an uncommon choice among Bordeaux châteaux. Second wines include the Le Charme de Cos Labory and the Saint Estèphe de Cos Labory which is sourced from the youngest vines of the estate.
