Producer Information
Château Fonroque is a Bordeaux wine producer located in Saint-Émilion. It has been owned by the Moueix family since 1931, and has been managed by Alain Moueix since 2001. The classified Grand Cru Classé estate produces a Merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend grand vin, as well as a second wine, Château Cartier, from 100 percent Merlot. The Fonroque estate spans 20 hectares (49 acres) of land, planted to almost 18ha (44 acres) of vines, with an average ages of around 35 years. Around 80 percent of the vineyard land is planted to Merlot with the remaining to Cabernet Franc on limestone and clay-limestone soils. Château Fonroque’s grand vin is produced with around 85 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Franc. In the winery, the grapes are hand-picked and sorted, and are then fermented in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (40 percent new) for 18 months before bottling. Fonroque’s second wine is barrel matured for 16 months, also with 30 percent new French oak. Alain Moueix was one of the first vignerons in Bordeaux to practice organic farming methods, and is now also certified biodynamic.
