Reviews:
- Wine & Spirits: From the Groth family’s estate vineyards, this has the lush fruit of a classic Oakville cabernet. The structure is lean and firm, with purple and blueberry fruit running straight through it. Sleek mineral tannins keep it tight, revealing a profile that will expand over time in bottle.
- Wine Enthusiast: The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is big and lush with huge gobs of fruit in the aroma and flavor. The texture of the wine is soft and supple, typical of Cabernet Sauvignons grown in our area of the Oakville AVA. Patience during bottle aging will reward the “steward” with an outstanding bottle over the next 10 to 15 years.
Producer Information
Groth Vineyards and Winery is located in the Oakville sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. It is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines, but produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and, more recently, a Bordeaux-styled Estate White as well. Dennis and Judy Groth bought the 120-acre (50-hectare) property in Oakville in 1981, and another 44 acres (18 hectares) south of Yountville a year later. The Oakville property in particular is considered prime real estate – Plumpjack, Screaming Eagle and Silver Oak are all a stone’s throw from the Groth site. In the vineyards, Groth uses cover crops to establish a healthy insect population and preserve soil moisture, an important consideration in California’s dry environment. Since 1996, some 90 percent of the vineyards have been replanted to match each soil type with its most suitable clone and rootstock. Both the generic and reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are sourced from the Oakville property, and are full-bodied and true to the appellation. The Groth Chardonnay comes from the Yountville property, and a Sauvignon Blanc is produced from fruit purchased from around the valley. The inaugural 2019 Estate White is a Bordeaux white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and is the first Groth white wine to be produced from fruit gown exclusively on the Oakville vineyard. Groth’s wines are distributed across the United States, and are available at the winery, which is known for its distinctive California Mission-styled architecture. Dennis Groth is actively involved in the Napa Valley wine community, and has served as president of the Napa Valley Vintners. Groth continues to be family-owned and operated today.
