Reviews:
- James Suckling: Sweet tobacco with prunes and spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with round tannins and a fresh herb and sweet ripe fruit. Long and intense. Slightly sweet fruit finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Drink now.
- Vinous: The 2007 Lodovico bursts from the glass with layers of seamless dark fruit. Leather, licorice and sweet French oak add considerable depth and complexity in this dark, structured wine. This shows fabulous intensity through to the intense, powerful finish.
Producer Information
Tenuta di Biserno is an Italian wine producer, located on the borders of Bolgheri in Tuscany. Established in 1995, the estate was founded by Lodovico Antinori of Ornellaia fame. The land was initially to be incorporated into the Ornellaia holdings, but Antinori decided that the terroir was so different that the site should become its own project. Now, Tenuta di Biserno produces a colection of its own Super Tuscan wines under the IGT Toscana designation. The vineyard is located in the Alta Maremma region close to the coast, where there are cooling influences from the Mediterranean sea. The free-draining soil here is mainly alluvial, made up of limestone and calcium carbonate. This terroir has proved excellent for the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that was planted in 2003 and for subsequent plantings of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand-harvested and are fermented in stainless steel before being aged in both French oak and bottle. Insoglio del Cinghiale is Biserno’s flagship wine. It is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot and is only made in the very best vintages. Lodovico spends up to 21 months in new French oak, and then a further 12 in bottle before release. Biserno, named for the estate, is a blend of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged for just 15 months in oak. Biserno also produces a Grappa di Toscana.
