Another lovely showing from a lineup of wines sampled at Terra Blanca. The 2007 Onyx is drinking beautifully—an elegant Bordeaux-style blend.Generous, layered aromas of blackberries, cassis, ripe plum, bay leaf, and cedar lead into a wine that is focused and finely tuned. Powdery tannins act as a foundation to a black-fruited core. Spice, incense and green peppercorn on the close.

Producer Information
Situated on 300 acres of Red Mountain in eastern Washington, Terra Blanca Winery and Estate Vineyard is a family-owned winery that enjoys panoramic views of the lower Yakima Valley. They produce acclaimed red wines, white wines and dessert wines. Terra Blanca owners, Keith and ReNae Pilgrim purchased land in 1992 and planted the first 50 acres of grape vines in 1993. The first tasting room was opened in 1998, and operated out of their home. They created their first estate vintage in 1997 and in 2006 opened a 55,000 square foot expansion that included a 10,000 square foot tasting room and banquet facility. The vineyard was expanded and now totals more than 90 acres. Wines from Terra Blanca have been described as “polished and effusive” and as having a “big structure… with a solid finish” the by Wine Spectator. Basking on the warm slopes of the gentle southwestern portion of Red Mountain, Terra Blanca wines exemplify the sun, soil and microclimate of the AVA. Soils rich with calcium carbonate and minerals, warm day time temperature and cool evenings, and access to well water for irrigation mean that grapes express the concentrated fruit, balance and structure of the Red Mountain terroir. Terra Blanca was the first winery in Washington to have caves for aging their wines and now has capacity for some 4,000 barrels. Owner and winemaker, Keith Pilgrim uses only French oak barrels for aging his wines; his thought is that the barrels play a supporting role to the intensely concentrated Red Mountain fruit. Pilgrim crafts a style of wine that captures the vibrate fruit from Washington’s Red Mountain coupled with the structure, balance and elegance found in many European wines.
